Socialist and Democrat MEPs called on the EU on Wednesday to launch accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia.
“The EU must assess the historically important security implications of the enlargement process for stability and unity on the European continent and the Western Balkans”, MEPs say.
In a joint statement, they called for progress at the June summit, citing the two countries’ rapporteurs Izabel Santos and Tonino Pecula.
The European Parliament will vote on two resolutions on Thursday urging member countries to launch accession talks with the two countries who have fulfilled all conditions a long time ago.
“Especially with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, EU’s enlargement and presence remain more important than ever”, the statement read.
