The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, criticized the bill granting management of the Butrint National Park to a private foundation as an ‘unprecedented corruptive act’.

Speaking to the media before entering Monday’s plenary session, Berisha said he will stop Prime Minister Edi Rama from playing around with the Butrint National Park.

Among other things, Berisha said the plan aims to ‘dissolve the park district’.

“The protection of Butrint should be an imperative cause for every Albanian. I guarantee Edi Rama that I won’t allow him to treat Butrint like an object. Butrint is a property of the Albanian people, it is one of our most precious national heritages”.

“Those who want to dissolve the park used a management plan to achieve that objective, and come up with an unprecedented corruptive act”.

The Albanian government and the Albanian-American Development Foundation will jointly set up a foundation tasked to manage the Butrint National Park.

The bill is set to pass for a vote at the Albanian Parliament on Monday.

In an interview for Euronews Albania activist Andi Tepelena also says the bill is filled with ambiguity, in addition to a clear conflict of interest.

“The foundation not only takes on the responsibility to manage Butrint but also drafted the bill. This is clearly a conflict of interest”, Tepelena said.

The activist warned that civil society organizations will take the case to court if MPs adopt the bill.
