Former Interior Minister Sander Lleshaj speaking as a guest on Euronews Albania’s Today said he was concerned that law enforcement officers have been failing to hit their targets, in light of recent police operations.

According to the former minister, the problems with justice in Albania can only be tackled by intertwining mechanical interventions with moral criteria.

“We believe that we can solve problems through a mechanical approach, by appointing prosecutors who earn high incomes, and suppose that will buy them off and keep them loyal to the law,” he said.

“Prosecutors get paid more than the president. The President’s salary is half of that of a SPAK prosecutor”.

“We’ve created an illusion, but that’s not how things work”, Lleshaj said.

He also added that the leaked material was sensitive information which adds even more reason for concern.

According to Lleshaj, respective authorities must find a way to recruit in the ranks of the police, individuals who aren’t bribed easily.
