PM Edi Rama held the traditional speech at the United Nations headquarters shortly before Albania assumes the Presidency of the Security Council.
Rama stated that one of the first issues that will be brought up for discussion will be the increase of international accountability, while also bringing before justice countries that violate human rights and international law.
“Today’s objectives are three-fold. First and foremost, the role of the international community should be elevated so that countries responsible for violations of international law can be held accountable.
Second of all, the mechanisms of accountability should be reinforced not only on the state level but also on the regional and international levels.
And thirdly, we need to shift our attention towards victims; to determine the truth about international crimes, the massive violations of human rights and the serious violations of international humanitarian rights,” – said Rama.
In addition, the Albanian prime minister underlined that the war in Ukraine is presenting multiple challenges and threats to the entire world.
Lastly, according to Rama, the recent war has reinforced the need for greater accountability.
