Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama called the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group to a meeting on Saturday morning to collect the necessary signatures in designating Bajram Begaj as the official party nominee.
Rama hailed Begaj, who currently serves as the General Commander of the Armed Forces, as a person who “fulfills all the criteria” for becoming the new head of state.
The head of the government revealed some of the discussions that took place at the meeting, before discarding three other potential candidates that MPs were presented with.
“We had three directions presented by the parliamentary group, who were determined based on the profiles of the proposals made. One direction was self-nominations, but that was discarded immediately.
PM Rama asserted that one of the names that were proposed but got ruled out was former SP leader Fatos Nano.
“The second direction were candidates with contributions for the Socialist Party, including former chairman Fatos Nano, for whom we have the greatest of respect but had to exclude because at this stage the SP has the burden to belong to everyone”.
“So, we focused on the third direction, where the group had made available 26 candidacies of honorable women and men with different profiles. After a very qualitative discussion, in the end, we had 6 candidacies that were discussed in a very consensual way to reach the candidate who got the consensus of all “, concluded Rama.
