Kosovo Police have declared that no teargas was used during today’s protest staged by veterans of Kosovo’s Liberation Army (KLA).
Through a statement for the press, the police stated that protestors tried to enter the premises of Kosovo’s Parliament Building y force, while also throwing various objects and smoke grenades in the direction of officers tasked with protecting the government building.
As a result of these attacks and the tossing around of these objects, 2 police officers were injured and are currently receiving medical assistance.
Today’s protest was called a sign of massive discontent with a new law that is expected to be voted in Parliament.
The draft bill was designed with the intention of bringing up the minimum wage from 170 to 250 euros.
The issue that KLA veterans have with this is that the pension scheme that is awarded to them per month is the same as the national minimum wage. However, this new bill didn’t include them in the group of people benefiting from a rise in the minimum wage.
Opposition parties in Kosovo like the PDK have come out in support of KLA veterans appealing to other MPs to refuse to vote for this new law for as long as it doesn’t include vulnerable groups who have risked their lives defending the country.
