Greece has joined in efforts to extinguish fires at Sazan Island in Albania.

Defense Minister Niko Peleshi announced that the neighboring country lent an aircraft equipped with water tanks, while the aerial intervention started in the early hours of Tuesday.

Speaking from Greece where he’s currently on an official visit, minister Peleshi thanked the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for the “unsparing assistance in such emergencies”.

Canadair CL-415, the aircraft lent by Greece, is specifically built to target blazing fires from an aerial distance, as well as help out in search and rescue operations.

For about four days, Sazan Island has been ravaged by flames.

On Monday, unofficial sources reported explosions potentially coming from former ammunition depots, as the area that is currently under fire used to be a military base.

The chief of the civil emergency services Haki Cako ruled out the allegations as false in an interview for Euronews Albania on Monday.

The cause of the fires has not been confirmed.
