Left-wing or right-wing – how do Albanians view the main parties in their country?

Around 80% of Albanians think that the Socialist Party (SP) is extremely left-wing in its views and political stances.

Less than 1 in 10 Albanians (9.6%) see the Socialist Party as a moderate left-wing party and almost no one thinks that this party’s stances are in line with a right-wing ideology.

Two-thirds (70.7%) of Albanian citizens believe that the Democratic Party is extremely right-wing.

Less than 15% of Albanian citizens find that DP’s stances are in line with a moderate right-wing ideology.

Albanians don’t feel the same about the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI).

More than half (56.4%) think that SMI belongs to the moderate left.

Meanwhile, 1 in 3 (31.3%) believe that the party led by Monika Kryemadhi leans towards the moderate right.

Euronews Albania’s Barometer asked Albanian citizens about the way they perceive the stances of the main parties in the country, including their leaders.

The results show that 80% of participants believe that PM Edi Rama holds extreme left-wing views.

More than half of Albanian citizens (51.1%) believe that the former DP leader Lulzim Basha holds extremist right-wing views.

At the same time, more than 1 in 4 (28.5%) of citizens view Basha’s stances as moderate right-wing.

75.5% of Albanian citizens view former PM Sali Berisha’s stances as extremely right-wing.

Former SMI leader Ilir Meta is perceived by 54.4% of Albanian citizens as moderate left-leaning and by 33.8% as moderate right-leaning.

Findings from Euronews Albania’s Barometer poll conducted by MRB and Data Centrum on a national level were reached through 1000 in-person conversations conducted from April 25 – May 7.
