The Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski, reiterated his stance against the proposal made by French President Emmanuel Macron for creating a new political union, in case negotiations with the EU fail.
In a joint press conference with PM Edi Rama and President Aleksandar Vucic, he listed the conditions to resolve the deadlock with Bulgaria.
“We have announced our stance, our red line, and I want to reaffirm that we would accept a proposal that would guarantee these key elements: Clear formulation of the Macedonian language and protection for the Macedonian identity; historical disputes cannot be part of the negotiating framework; accession talks must open before the Constitutional amendment for the involvement of Bulgarians; EU guarantees that there will be no other conditions from Bulgaria and that every solution should be adopted by local institutions”, said Kovacevski.
According to the Macedonian premier, Bulgaria is taking steps backward by deciding not to lift the veto.
“Bulgaria is returning in the past and rebuilding a blockade that doesn’t benefit anyone, apart from third parties who will now have an open field to fill up the void due to these careless steps”.
“North Macedonia has done very well until now, we’ve taken difficult decisions. It is time for the EU to deliver”.
