Former Albanian President, Bamir Topi stated that he knows many people, both in his public and private life, who have cooperated with the former State Security during the communist regime, but he cannot speak because of the position he has held.

In an interview for Euronews Albania, Topi said that these people behave in a strange way, as if they were not collaborators and nothing actually happened.

According to him, the law on opening files was initiated for a specific person, citizen I.M., who is suspected to be the head of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta.

“Nothing new, it’s a fable we’ve been hearing for 32 years. It is an obligation that the policy should have been adopted years ago. Now, it looks like this law is being passed specifically for one man. It is no longer a top priority of the time. I have insisted that the files should be opened.

The person you see here is full of information, because I have been in a position where I had the opportunity to have access, I know a lot of things, I cannot speak because I respect the position I had. I know very well, people I have in front of me, public people, people who have surrounded me in my private life, it is a very strange society. There are people who cooperated with the State Security, this is a very strange society. Politics has deliberately kept the history of the files in secret, and used it for blackmail,” he claimed.

94 MPs voted yesterday in favor of the law on the opening of files.

Out of 140 MPs present in the hall, only 95 participated in the vote, with one abstaining and 45 others refusing to vote.
