Journalist Agim Baci stated that it isn’t in Prime Minister Edi Rama’s interest to start a probe into the chief democrat, Sali Berisha, by the Albanian judiciary, after the US Department of State publicly designated him.

In an interview for Euronews Albania, Baci underlined that the longer this issue is dragged on, the more unclear the opposition will remain.

According to him, if SPAK starts an investigation against Berisha, the same thing could very well happen to Rama.

“Protests are a medium that strengthens the internal path. The government however is not overthrown by protesting. Even in July, there was a big protest, but the protest ended, and [Berisha] back went home. The protest helps in the exchange of civil concerns, but it does not end there. The question is, today under the present conditions, with this type of organization, the coalition, being ‘non grata’, will they be able to defeat Edi Rama – or not?

Only Edi Rama cares that the investigation does not start here, because the longer it is delayed, the more ambiguous the opposition is, the better it is for him. Did you hear Rama ask the judiciary why they don’t investigate Berisha? Never. He is interested in not having an investigation also because if there was an investigation for Berisha, there could also be one for Rama,” he argued.

The Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, Gabriel Escobar, said a day ago that the decision to declare Sali Berisha ‘non grata’ was not political, but institutional.

He also underlined that the US has good partners in the Democratic Party and wants this political force to be a strong and important contributor to political stability in Albania.
