The Constitutional Court is expected to decide within a time limit of 30 days, regarding the request presented by a group of MPs of the Democratic Party for the removal of the mandate of Socialist MP Olta Xhacka, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Democratic MPs, the minister is in an open conflict of interest.

The allegations involve Xhacka’s husband, who has been accorded the status of a strategic investor in a resort that is being built in the south of the country.

Franc Nuri, the Democratic Party lawyer, said in an interview for Euronews Albania that Minister Olta Xhacka’s husband has unjustly taken advantage of state benefits as a strategic investor, which constitutes an open conflict of interest as a result of his wife’s status and connections.

“The strategic investor status itself foresees a whole list of advantages, for example, if the land is arable land, the state has the right to change its status thus, increasing its value several times. There are a number of advantages when you are a strategic investor that are made possible by the state. By obtaining the status of a strategic investor, you have advantages in obtaining permits and licenses, which are obtained in record time with reduced fees”, said the lawyer.
