The disappearance of 280 kg of gold from the nation’s gold reserve, and the theft of the state treasury, have undoubtedly been one of the most sensational events in post-communist Albania.

The perpetrators of the theft of the national treasure, which was hidden in the tunnels of Krraba, have not yet been found and to this day this matter remains an unsolved puzzle.

Meanwhile, according to the latest information in the press, the Appeals Court has ordered SPAK to investigate the source of the wealth of both Ilir Meta and Sali Berisha, whether it has been declared according to the law and whether or not these prominent politicians are somehow related to the theft of the state treasury.

The decision bears the signature of judge Flojera Davidhi, who overturns the decision of October 7, 2022 of the SPAK prosecutor, Manjola Kajana, for not starting the criminal proceedings related to the report of lawyer Idajet Beqiri on the theft of Kerraba’s gold.

Beqiri demanded the criminal prosecution of Ilir Meta and Sali Berisha as suspected organizers and beneficiaries of the gold theft.

Meanwhile, lawyer Spartak Ngjela said in an interview for Euronews Albania that in the case of the theft of Albania’s gold in Krrabe, we are dealing with a crime that continues, since the stolen money was put into new investments.

This is the reason, said Ngjela, why the case was not overturned by the Appeal.

According to him, the fact that the names of Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta, who were both prime ministers at one point in Albania’s political history, reappear on the scene shows that there is new evidence or evidence that has not been used previously. 

“The money that was stolen is being invested. We are facing an ongoing crime, this was the reason why the Appeal did not overturn it. Why did he get these 2 [Meta and Berisha]? There will be evidence. Let’s see how the evidence will be exposed. The fact that two former prime ministers have been involved in this matter leads us to the conclusion that there is new evidence that has not been used, or new evidence that they were not aware of before,” said Ngjela.
