The official figures of INSTAT have recently shown the difficult situation of Albanian society in terms of the chain of generations, as it is noticed that there are fewer births in all regions of the country.
Sociologist Maria Dojçe shows some of the factors that have influenced the decrease in the birth rate in the southeast.
“I think we have high immigration. We have young emigrants who attribute their birth and descendants to the countries where they emigrated. The second factor is resistance to having 1 or 2 children. Studies show that many couples end up with 1-2 children. Which means they only replaced themselves in the life cycle but did not contribute to the growth of society,” she said.
“The economy, the financial aspect of raising a child is the reason why couples hesitate to have children. Today, everyone has to work hard to maintain a job and a somewhat comfortable income,” added the sociologist. The Albanian government should do more to support mothers and young families.
The official figures obtained from the maternity hospital of Korca show a drastic decrease in the birth rate, where in 2011 nearly 1300 children were born, while last year about 750 children were born.
