In the north of Kosovo, where it is populated by Serbs, local elections are being held. The electoral process has caused ethnic tensions and fears of possible incidents.
For this reason, the local police and contingents of KFOR are on standby.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on Saturday that the Serbian minority will boycott the elections. Meanwhile, the Serbs themselves are divided as far as participation is concerned.
“This elections are just like the others before and if we, the Serbs, do not participate, then what are our hopes for the future?” said Sladjana Pantovic, independent candidate for Zvecan.
“These elections shouldn’t have been held, they should have been postponed for two or three months. This is not the right moment for elections”, said Nenad Igiç, a resident.
11 candidates are competing for mayor of Northern Mitrovica, Zubin Potok, Leposaviç and Zveçan; while 60 candidates are competing for the municipal council of Zveçan and Leposaviç. Voting centers close at 10 o’clock.
