The Brazilian football legend Pelé, one of the best of all time, was honored in his home country by having his name put in the dictionary.
From now on, the official meaning of his name according to the dictionary is “extrordinary”, “unique”.
A campaign called “Pelé in the dictionary” was started by the Pelé Foundation and SporTV and soon gathered 100 thousand signatures, after which it was officially accepted.
“This is one of the most original campaigns I’ve ever been part of. His name in the dictionary is a very important part in the legacy and will keep Pelé forever alive,” said Joe Fraga, executive director of the Pelé Foundation.
Examples of the usage of the new word may include: “Pelé in medicine”, “Pelé in basketball”, “Pelé in tennis” or “Pelé in drama”.
The new word is also included in the digital edition of the dictionary in Brazil and the same will happen even with the written version.
