There is growing debate in Montenegro regarding Kosovo recognition after election of new president. Journalist Bekim Çoba spoke today to Euronews Albania, about the political situation in the country.

“A few days ago, one of the new municipalities sent an initiative to withdraw Kosovo recognition. It sounds funny, but it serves pro-Serb parties. Municipalities cannot withdraw recognition of a country, but political parties find different methods to get to their voters,” Çoba said in an interview.

Asked if there is a growing number of citizens in Montenegro who do not support Kosovo’s independence anymore, the journalist said that there are lots of those who are loyal to pro-Serb parties.

“The population that does not support Kosovo’s independence is not a majority. They wouldn’t go as far as threatening this independence. That part of the population that would trade EU integration in favor of recognition withdrawal, is not high. But they have some support and pro-Serb parties want that support,” Çoba concluded.
