Serbian Police arrested the main suspect in a drive-by shooting that killed at least 8 people and injured 14 more.
The 21-year-old boy, identified by initials U.B, was arrested early Friday near the central Serbian town of Kragujevac, about 100 kilometers south of Belgrade.
The Interior Ministry said there had been “an extensive search” to capture the suspect. Some 600 officers reportedly were part of the manhunt. Police offers used a helicopter, drones and multiple police patrols in order to catch the gunman.
Reports on local media say the suspect started firing at people with an automatic weapon after having an argument with a police officer in Dubona, Thursday evening.
Serbian Interior Minister called it an “act of terror”, meanwhile there is still no official declaration by relevant authorities.
This attack comes only a few days after a mass school shooting in central Belgrade. A 14-year-old boy killed 8 pupils and the school guard, using his father’s gun.
The tragedy sparked a debate about the general state of the nation following decades of crises and conflicts. Authorities moved to boost gun control, as police urged citizens to lock up their guns and keep them away from children.
The government ordered a two-year moratorium on short-barrel guns, tougher control of people with guns and shooting grounds and tougher sentences for people who enable minors to get hold of guns.
