Immediately after a case in which a 27-year-old Jani Rustemaj ended up in a coma due to an overdose of methadone, the director of the Tirana police, Tonin Vocaj, asked the structures of the 6 police stations of the capital not to arrest people who are drug users or narcotics, but only to be accompanied.
In such cases, police officers must keep drug costumers under surveillance.
At the time of escorting these persons, the doctor must also be present to specify the detainee’s condition, or to provide medical assistance.
Jani Rustemaj was arrested on April 12 for stealing a carpet and a pair of sneakers. Since April 17, he has been admitted to the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center in critical condition.
