An official of the US Department of State has reacted to the Greek media regarding the arrest of the candidate of the coalition “Together We Win” for the municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri.
Beleri was arrested in the early hours of May 12, 2 days before the local elections, while this Saturday the security measure is expected to be given to him in the court of Vlora.
“We call on the (Albanian) authorities to apply all laws fairly and equitably,” the State Department said regarding the arrest of Himara mayoral candidate Fredi Beleri in Albania.
Responding to a question from Greek correspondents in Washington, a representative of the US State Department asked to ensure the validity of the elections, calling on all parties to respect the laws.
In particular, the State Department representative said:
“We have repeatedly asked the authorities and political parties to ensure that voters can exercise their basic democratic right to express their will through free and fair elections.
It is important that everyone respects the laws and rules governing elections, as well as international rules, including the ban on buying or selling votes. We call on the authorities to apply all laws and regulations fairly and equitably. American embassy officials are joining other international institutions to monitor the elections across the country,” said the official of the US Department of State.
