Today, on May 14, Albanians will go to the ballot boxes to elect mayors and members of municipal councils for the next 4 years.
According to the latest list distributed by the Ministry of the Interior, 3 million and 650,550 Albanian citizens have the right to vote in the May 14 elections. Of these, 122,545 are citizens who have the opportunity to vote for the first time. These citizens will be able to exercise their right in 5,211 polling stations throughout the country. But there will be those who will not be able to vote this May 14. It is about 1,111 citizens who were not included in the lists due to decriminalization, since the punishment they received, in addition to freedom and some other rights, was also denied the right to vote.
These official numbers distributed by the ministry also include those Albanians who live and work abroad and whose only way to vote will be coming to Albania, as this time the vote of immigrants from the countries where they live will not be possible.
There are 23,907 candidates in the May 14 local elections. This number is divided into 143 candidates for mayors, and 23,645 candidates for members of municipal councils.
In most of the municipalities there are 2 candidates each, where representatives the Socialist Party and the Together We Win Coalition, two political entities that have their own candidates in all 61 municipalities. The Democratic Party has issued candidates for mayor in 14 municipalities and a list of candidates for councilors in 54 municipalities of the country.
In 18 municipalities, the race will be between three or more candidates. Tirana has the largest number of candidates in the race, with 5 rivals from the opposition trying to challenge the SP candidate and current mayor Veliaj. After the capital, it is Saranda with the highest number of candidates, where there are 4 contenders for the leadership of the municipality in the south of the country.
