1 in 3 elderly people in Albania need long-term care. Geriatrics experts have drawn up a report which askes the urgent need of help for the elderly in our country.
“1 in 3 elderly people need long-term care, but these needs are different, 5% need 24-hour care, while the rest for a few hours during the day”, said Alban Ylli, geriatrics expert.
In 95% of cases, care is provided by family members
Experts believe that Albania is not ready to provide residential care for everyone, especially in conditions where the number of the elderly people is increasing.
In these conditions, experts suggest that family caregivers be strengthened, and at the same time they need to have support, since in their opinion, the overload created by intensive care can lead to abuse of the elderly.
