After Enkelejd Alibeaj’s resignation as the head of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party, a group of deputies have called an urgent meeting to fill in the vacancy.

Gazment Bardhi, who holds the position of the general secretary of the party, will assume Alibeaj’s duties as head of the parliamentary group, after being voted by members of the group who were present in the meeting.

Bardhi got the support of deputies registered in the parliamentary groups of the DP allies.

There are 52 deputies of the DP, and Bardhi was voted by 19 of them. Others were not present at the meeting, mostly deputies that have aligned themselves with the group of Sali Berisha.

The latter held a press conference this Friday, to discuss on the elections result yet again.

Asked if he will take responsibility for the defeat and resign, Berisha said that he will respect the statute approved in the December 11th Assembly, where he and his followers officially split from the rest of the Democratic Party, which then led to a months-long judicial battle being fought for the seal and logo of the party, resulting with the court not recognizing Berisha as the official leader of the democrats.

“The chairman to lose in the elections, goes through a vote of confidence. This will also happen, even if the elections were rigged. I do not need any alibies, because the statute will be applied,” declared Berisha in Friday’s press conference, adding that the party will go through an all-level analysis, to carry on with the reformation of this political force.

“We do not recognize any parallel structure of the DP. I invite all deputies to sit and discuss, we are open to all of them. But we will not recognize facts from just anyone, there are rules and a statute,” commented Berisha on the appointment of Gazment Bardhi as head of the DP parliamentary group.
