NATO called on Kosovo’s institutions to immediately deescalate the situation created in the north, a day after the clashes between the Police of Kosovo and groups of local Serbs.
“We urge the Institutions in Kosovo to deescalate immediately and call on all parties to resolve the situation through dialogue. NATO/KFOR remains vigilant and will ensure a safe and secure environment,” wrote NATO’s Spokesperson Oana Lungescu on Twitter.
NATO’s peacekeeping mission to Kosovo, KFRO said that “the situation in the north is extremely dangerous in the process towards normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, which risks further escalation of tensions”.
KFOR condemned “the unilateral actions” and called on all parties to restrain from violence.
Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti said he understands the concerns coming from international partners regarding the situation in the north municipalities of the country where local Serbs refused entry in office to the new elected mayors, but any other option would be a breach of obligations.
The international factor, led by the United States also condemned the actions of the Government of Kosovo, demanding that tensions be reduced immediately.
