Albania has experienced a population decline of 1.1% in 2022, bringing the country’s population to 2,761,785 inhabitants.
The decrease in the number of residents can be attributed to several factors related to demographic structure and emigration patterns, leading to a continuous decline in the population since 1990.
In just the past year, the country has seen a reduction of 32,500 individuals due to population movement. The decline is further influenced by a high median age and the choice to have fewer children.
According to data from the Institute of Statistics, the average age has increased to 38.8 years, up from 38.2 years the previous year.
Population calculations as of January 1st 2023 indicate that only one district in Tirana has witnessed population growth, while eleven other districts have experienced a decline in residents, including Durrës, which had previously shown a positive trend.
In terms of gender, Albania has 27,000 more females than males.
