Although the meeting North Macedonia Prime Minister, Dimitar Kovačevski, with the chairman of VMRO DPMNE, Hristijan Mickoski, had no result a day before, they have put some compromise options on the table to write towards a consensus to enable the constitutional changes that would allow North Macedonia, the opening of European Union membership chapters.

Dimitar Kovacevski has offered the opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE, participation in Government if this party supports the initiative to change the Constitution.

After the meeting, Kovacevski said that after the approval of the first phase of amendment of Constitution, a broad government would be formed, with the participation of opposition. According to Kovacevski, the opposition would have five ministers, with which the party he leads, the Social Democratic League.

“I proposed that we vote on the opening of Constitution, approve the necessary changes and immediately after the last vote go to the elections. But, during the past period, I realized that for Mickoski it is important for VMRO-DPMNE to be part of Government. To prove that we are not interested in political points, but in the future of the country, I proposed that immediately after we vote for the opening of the Constitution, VMRO-DPMNE should enter the Government”, Kovacevski declared.

The chairman of VMRO DPMNE, Hristijan Mickoski, said that he has accepted that this party is part of the Government, but on the condition that the constitutional changes are approved only after the EU membership talks have been completed and all the member states of the union have ratified the membership of North Macedonia.

The head of VMRO DPMNE also demanded that in an expanded government there should be no place for the Democratic Union for Integration, which VMRO DPMNE accuses of “involvement in organized crime and corruption” and in other processes that “have damaged national and state interests”.

Democratic Union for Integration has responded to VMRO DPMNE for its willingness not to participate in the general government.

“The DUI is ready to support a Government without the DUI until the elections, if the opposition supports the constitutional changes, which should enter into force before the formation of that government. European future of the citizens is the first”, wrote foreign minister from the ranks of DUI, Bujar Osmani.

Albanian opposition parties also have conditions for supporting the constitutional changes. They request that the changes also include changing the definition of the Albanian language in the Constitution.

Currently, the Albanian language is recognized as the language spoken by over 20 percent of the population of North Macedonia.

The Constitution should be changed in the preamble, for the inclusion of Bulgarian minority in it, as a state-forming people, which is a condition for the start of talks on the European membership of North Macedonia, based on the agreement with Sofia on the resolution of disagreements on language, identity and differences historical.
