Blood donation is never enough. On World Blood Donation Day, local and global health experts have appealed for voluntary donations.

“We as the National Blood Transfusion Center on this day thank all the voluntary blood donors in our country and call on all citizens to donate blood, donate blood components and donate often,” said Irena Seferi, director of National Blood Transfusion Center.

The number of voluntary donors in Albania is increasing. In the past year, there were about 5,000 voluntary donors and over 18,000 family donors.

According to experts, our country needs 30,000 units of blood every year, which are used for patients with blood and internal diseases, pathologies such as tumors, hemorrhage during childbirth, surgical interventions, etc. There are also 600 thalassemic patients in our country who need to be treated with blood units every three weeks.

The need for blood increases even more during the summer due to the increase in the number of car accidents and trauma.

According to data from the World Health Organization, 118.5 million blood donations are collected globally in a year.
