Albanian lawyer Eva Buzo, residing in Australia, embarked on a remarkable challenge to break a historic swimming record.
With unwavering determination, Buzo set out to swim across the treacherous Otranto Channel, starting from Italy and aiming to reach the shores of Albania.
However, her journey was not without obstacles and unexpected turns.
The ambitious journey began from the early morning hours of Thursday, when Buzo dived into the waters of the Otranto Channel, fueled by a desire to push her limits and accomplish something extraordinary.
With the support of her trainers and a logistical assistance boat, she braved the vast expanse of the open sea.
However, Buzo encountered her fair share of hurdles during the arduous swim.
After approximately 27 hours at sea, she faced the initial signs of distress, including difficulties in speaking due to a swollen tongue caused by excessive salt intake.
About 9 miles away from the Vlora coastline, Buzo made the courageous decision to interrupt her journey.
The intervention was necessitated by a jellyfish sting that resulted in swelling and further exacerbated by the effects of excessive salt intake.
Eva’s cousin, Linda Buzo, shed light on this interruption, emphasizing the importance of ensuring her well-being.
Buzo was swiftly provided with first aid by medical professionals at the Vlora hospital, where her condition was deemed stable.
Despite signs of fatigue and various stings, Buzo remained conscious and able to communicate. The medical team is closely monitoring her lung function and blood pressure, while allowing her time to recuperate from fluid loss.
It is estimated that at least 4 hours of recovery will be necessary before Buzo is ready to resume her activities.
A lawyer in Australia by profession, Buzo is also actively engaged in civil society, defending human rights. She has had experience working in East Africa, South Asia and Australia.
