Miroslav Lajcak must resign. Voices critical of the work that the EU’s special envoy has done for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia have increased.

During the session at the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Policy, the Austrian MEP Thomas Waitz said that Lajcak’s positions in relation to the tensions between the two countries have reduced the credibility of the mediated dialogue.

“How do you consider an agreement that was not successfully signed by both parties?! Where do you really see success in your work in the last four years? In our communication, it seems as if the aggression came from Kosovo, while it was organized by Serbia, the mercenaries came from Serbia and attacked KFOR. A bully is always a bully. We really gave a bad impression by defending the abusers while attacking the victims of aggression, even if we think some political moves were wrong. This is undermining our credibility in the region”, said Thomas Waitz, Austrian MEP.

The Austrian MEP requested that, just as for Kosovo, the demands and pressure should also be for Serbia, which, in his view, is being unfairly favored.

“You present all the demands you have to Kosovo, what it should do, while you don’t say a single point to Serbia what it should offer. And all those statements about the Russian orientation of Serbia, the continuation of the aggression, what signal do you think you give to those hundreds of thousands of protesters who rose up against the Vučić regime?! Are you discouraging them? I would personally ask you about your role in this”, he emphasized.

According to the general director for enlargement at the European Commission, Jan Koopman, the European Union has warned this week that it will communicate the punitive measures against Kosovo, which the bloc has prepared due to the failure to take the steps that have been requested to reduce tensions in the north.
