Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered his speech during the press conference of the High Summit in Brussels. He said that he will not allow Fredi Beleri’s case to pass without making a fuss.
Beleri was arrested before the elections on charges of buying and selling votes.
“I express my disappointment, my revolt over the fact that an elected mayor is arrested two days before his election and is in prison, in my opinion, with dubious procedures. I consider it a blow to the rule of law and to Albania’s attempt to adapt to the legal basis of the EU. I predict that this issue will be resolved very soon,” Mitsotakis declared.
He expressed his belief that their attitude will influence the change of opinion of the Albanian side.
“Compliance with the basic rules of the rule of law is a non-negotiable condition for any country that wants to become a member of the European family. I want to believe that this message has become completely clear in Albania,” said Greek Prime Minister.
On June 27, the Municipal Council of Himara was constituted in the absence of Beleri. He even sent a letter from prison where he wrote that permission for his oath was deliberately rejected by Prime Minister Edi Rama, as it “requires the alienation of the will of the Himariots”.
