The Vlora Prosecutor’s Office has concluded the investigation and has sent the case to trial for the killing of 7-year-old Jonada Avdia, who was struck on the seashore by a speedboat driven by former Chief of Himara Police Arjan Tase about a year ago.
Tase is accused by the Prosecution of intentional homicide.
In addition to the former police chief, nine employees of the State and Municipal Police are also under accusation for abuse of duty.
Implicated under the charge of “abuse of duty” are the head of the border sector in the Vlora Local Directorate of Border and Migration, the chief of the Border Police Station in Dhërmi, as well as the four police officers assigned to patrol the area and protect beachgoers from boats.
The tragic incident occurred on 2 August last year in the beach of Potam in southern Albania.
The 7-year-old victim, who was on vacation in Albania, was swimming with her father, when a speedboat driven by Arjan Tase struck her with its propeller, leading to her immediate death.
The cop allegedly drove the craft into waters designated exclusively for swimmers with marked buoys.
The incident sparked widespread reactions and led to the dissolution of the Vlora Border Police structure, as well as the dismissal of Arjan Tase from the police ranks. At that time, he held the position of chief of police in Elbasan.
Tase now faces a potential prison sentence of 10 to 20 years for the charge of intentional homicide.
