Deputy of the Freedom Party, who is also the Vice Chairman of this political force, Petrit Vasili appeared at the Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK) on Friday.
Vasili stayed in the premises of the Special Prosecutor’s Office for about 2 hours and is reported to have provided clarifications regarding the investigations being conducted on the party’s lobbying in the United States, concerning an undisclosed sum of 700,000 dollars.
After leaving the Prosecutor’s office, Vasili stated that he was there as a person who possesses information but did not provide further explanations.
“They [SPAK] had a few questions they were interested in and I informed them. Ask them [SPAK] on which case,” said Vasili after coming out of the Prosecutor’s office.
Previously, the former Secretary-General of the Freedom Party (which changed its name from the Socialist Movement for Integration), Endrit Braimllari, also provided explanations to the prosecutors.
The Special Anti-Corruption Structure has initiated investigations following the complaint by former deputy Halit Valteri, who claims that during the time the party was led by Ilir Meta, through a company based in Cyprus, it lobbied in the United States with money of unknown origin.
The complaint alleges that the party, led by Meta at that time, paid 700,000 US dollars for lobbying in the United States.
Last May, Austrian newspaper “Kronen Zeitung” published an article stating that Meta paid 700,000 dollars for lobbying through a Cypriot company, in order to secure a photo at former President Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony.
Investigations are ongoing to determine if the payments were declared in accordance with the law.
SPAK has registered the criminal proceedings solely based on the complaint and criminal offenses, but without specific names of suspects.
