The year 2022 marked the largest number of Albanians leaving for EU countries since 2010.
INSTAT data report about 74,000 Albanian citizens who, during 2022, received a residence permit in one of the countries of the union, thus establishing an increase of 34% compared to 2021.
In 2014, a decrease in the number of residence permits granted to Albanians was observed, which meant a decrease in their demand to live abroad and the end of a migratory cycle.
However, in 2015, another wave of departures was observed, which according to INSTAT data reached 70 thousand people for this year.
In 2020, a decrease in the number of residence permits granted to Albanians was again observed, this due to the pandemic, but nevertheless, a new trend of departures was observed again after the pandemic.
For 2022, Italy leads with nearly 35 thousand residence permits for Albanian citizens, followed by Greece with 14.3 thousand and Germany with 13.3 thousand.
From 2008, when INSTAT published the first data, there are a total of 832 thousand residence permits for Albanian citizens who left their country and received a residence permit in one of the EU countries.
