Kosovo Police reported on Friday that they have apprehended a Serbian citizen suspected of involvement in war crimes during the 1998-1999 conflict.

The arrest of M.P. took place on Friday evening at the Merdare border crossing between Kosovo and Serbia.

According to the police statement, during the war in Kosovo, the individual held the position of chief of the Serbian police in the municipality of Istog, located approximately 80 kilometers west of Pristina.

The suspect has been placed under a 48-hour detention order, but further details regarding his identity and the specific crimes he is accused of have not been disclosed.

The war in Kosovo resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 people, and more than 5,000 were reported missing. It came to an end with the intervention of NATO forces, which halted the atrocities committed by Serbian forces.

Nine years after the conflict, Kosovo declared its independence with the support of the United States and major Western European countries, but this move has been opposed by Belgrade, backed by Moscow.
