Greece may block aid to Albania if the case for the mayor of Himare, Fredi Beleri, is not resolved. The latter is in custody and has not yet been sworn in to run the municipality.

Greece sees critically the arrest of Fredi Beleri, the mayor elected by vote in Himara, but who has not taken the oath to run the Municipality.

According to what the Kathimerini newspaper writes, the Greek authorities say that this process is politically motivated because Albania has violated the right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence. And these actions can be accompanied by sanctions from the Hellenic state.

Diplomatic editor Vassilis Nedos, referring to the internal discussions in the Greek government after the failure in the talks with the Albanian counterparts, points out that at the beginning of December at the meeting of the European Council, Prime Minister Mitsotakis can veto the freezing of financial aid to Albania.

Even deputy the president of the EC, Margaritis Schinas, requested that the Albanian authorities resolve the issue, for the benefit of membership in the European Union.

We remind that Beleri is being held in custody on the charge of buying votes in the May 14 elections.
