The Turkish football team of Beşiktaş has been sanctioned for the violence caused by its fans during the match against Tirana on August 3.
UEFA has fined the team 40,000 euros and ordered them to play one match without spectators.
The punishment for the fans has been suspended, pending any repeated incidents within the next two years.
The decision was taken Tuesday evening after verifying the serious incidents that occurred in the Albanian capital.
Turkish fans caused disturbances at the start of the match against Tirana in “Air Albania” Stadium.
They clashed with Albanian fans and damaged some stadium seats. These incidents caused the match to start about 20 minutes late.
Issues with the fans continued even after the match ended.
Outside the stadium, there were further clashes between the fan groups. Around 15 Turkish and Albanian fans were apprehended by the police after the match.
UEFA’s decision includes a reduction of the penalty for Turkish player Arthur Masuaku. He had received a red card due to a harsh intervention. UEFA reduced his suspension from two matches to one as initially anticipated.
Tirana’s team lost 0-2 against Beşiktaş at “Air Albania” in the return match of the second leg of the Conference League, thus being eliminated from the competition.
