The Cave of Treni in Devoll dates back 6,000 years BC. It is one of the most significant prehistoric settlements in Albania with high archaeological value.

“In fact, the Cave of Treni is unique in its kind; it is part of the Prespa National Park and bears signs of habitation dating back to prehistory. It has been a habitat for people who lived there, as well as many other species that are crucial to the ecosystem. It is an important attraction, revealing elements of prehistory and how life was organized inside this cave,” Gjergj Koki, Director of the Regional Administration of Protected Areas in Korça tells Euronews Albania.

Despite its immense importance, this unique prehistoric monument remains unprotected.

“Residents living nearby often bring their livestock to this type of area for grazing or personal needs. A surrounding barrier made of eco-friendly materials designed to protect the cave’s perimeter has been planned. The aim is to prevent locals, passersby, and picnickers from entering the cave, starting fires, or discarding waste within its confines,” Koki further explains.

Representatives of the Devoll Municipality also spoke of their promotional efforts towards the prehistoric monument.

“Devoll Municipality has undertaken several consistent promotions, organized guided tours. Three years ago, we engaged with the tourist operators’ association, which incorporated it into their tour packages, recognizing its historical significance, and this cave is one of the crucial points in their tours,” says Alda Ago, Tourism Officer at Devoll Municipality.

However, Devoll Municipality officials admit they lack sufficient budget for work around the Cave of Treni.

Additionally, the lack of information poses a challenge for foreign tourists, as everything they can find about the monument is through the internet.
