A graffiti message reading “When the army returns to Kosovo” emerged in the courtyard of the Technical School in North Mitrovica. The graffiti, inscribed in Cyrillic script, was colored with the hues of the Serbian flag.

Veton Elshani, the Deputy Director of Kosovo Police for the Northern Region, confirmed to Radio Free Europe that authorities became aware of the graffiti’s content through social media channels.

He noted that the police have visited the site and are currently consulting with the prosecutor regarding the matter.

Since late July, similar graffiti with comparable slogans has surfaced in Belgrade and other Serbian cities. In August, a corresponding graffiti piece was observed in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The creation of this graffiti can be attributed to fans of the football club Crvena Zvezda. It materialized following a friendly match between Crvena Zvezda and the Italian club Fiorentina in Belgrade on July 26.

The message contained in the graffiti is drawn from a folk song famously performed by Metropolitan Amfilohije of the Serbian Orthodox Church and Bishop Atanasije.

In February of this year, activists from organizations such as the “Initiative of Youth for Human Rights” and the “Crocodile” association painted the same graffiti in red at Belgrade’s Slavija Square.

However, it has resurfaced in that location and various other spots in Belgrade since then.
