The Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party of Albania lodged a request for disciplinary action against seven opposition deputies with the Parliament on Tuesday.
The impetus for this request, as cited by the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, stems from the events that transpired a day earlier in the Parliament.
During these events, opposition deputies obstructed the rostrum and impeded the normal proceedings of Parliament, even refusing to allow members of the Socialist Party to address the assembly.
In the formal communication submitted to the Parliament, which was addressed to the Parliament’s Speaker, Lindita Nikolla, the majority of deputies call for the convening of the Secretariat for Procedures, Voting, and Ethics within the Parliament. Their aim is to assess and determine disciplinary measures against seven opposition deputies.
The specific deputies for whom disciplinary measures are requested include Gazment Bardhi, Bledion Nallbati, Flamur Noka, Edi Paloka, Albana Vokshi, Saimir Korreshi, and Lefter Gështenja.
The letter details the actions taken by these opposition deputies, which included the obstruction of a regular session and preventing registered speakers from expressing themselves.
For instance, Deputy Flamur Noka prevented any registered deputies from speaking, forcefully interrupting them during discussions. Additionally, Deputy Noka confiscated a card from the electronic device of Deputy Ismet Beqiraj, preventing him from addressing the assembly.
Furthermore, Deputy Gazment Bardhi attempted to physically assault the Speaker of the Parliament, Lindita Nikolla, by throwing a water bottle.
The letter conveys the extraordinary nature of the situation that unfolded during the plenary session on October 30, 2023.
“During this session, opposition deputies openly violated the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament and the Code of Conduct for Members of the Albanian Parliament,” the letter states.
“They commandeered the Parliament’s rostrum and removed cards from electronic devices belonging to deputies from the Socialist Parliamentary Group who had registered to discuss matters raised by voters. The situation eventually escalated into a physical altercation involving Deputy Vullnet Sinaj and Deputy Bledion Nallbati,” the letter concludes.
