The U.S. Department of State (DASH) has put on the list of sanctions Nexhat Krasniqi, the former director of the Department of Procurement in the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Kosovo, due to involvement in major corruption.
According to the announcement, he will be banned from entering the USA, writes Radio Free Europe.
“As a public official responsible for the supervision of procurement contracts, Krasniqi has abused his public position by accepting bribes in exchange for awarding the contract for the construction of the industrial park in the municipality of Drenas by the Eltoni company,” the announcement said.
According to DASH, today’s U.S. actions prove that Washington stands with those in Kosovo who demand accountability from corrupt public officials.
“This decision reaffirms the U.S. commitment to fighting corruption that harms the public interest, hinders the economic prosperity of states, and diminishes the ability of governments to respond effectively to the needs of their citizens.”
Likewise, Krasniqi’s children, Aulona Krasniqi and Olti Krasniqi, have also been placed under sanctions and will also not be allowed to enter the U.S.
In 2015, Krasniqi was sentenced to 26 months in prison after being found guilty of abuse of office in the case of the Business Park in Drenas.
Krasniqi had also been in the procurement department at the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure.
