“It is illegal migration that must be reduced and for this there will be closer cooperation with countries outside the European Union”.

With these words, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz commented on the Rama-Meloni agreement for the creation of a residence and repatriation center for migrants in Albania.

“It is a question of competences that belong to the Italian and Albanian governments. I believe that we should take into account that Albania will soon be a member of the EU, so we are talking about how to solve together the challenges and problems in the European family”, Scholz declared.

As for the progress of the Italian-Albanian model, the chancellor has emphasized that Germany will follow it closely.

“We will monitor it carefully. What is important is the establishment of a mechanism of solidarity in the EU and not trying to win the challenges alone”, said Scholz from Malaga, where he participated in the summit of the European Socialist Party.

According to him, this is the positive aspect of the reform of the common European asylum system, which is currently being discussed by the European Parliament and which is expected to be approved before the end of this legislature.

“Germany has a very clear position. On the one hand, we need to reduce illegal migration flows, and on the other hand, we need legal migration of talent and labor to grow our economy and protect our social security systems,” added Scholz.
