In an era marked by rapid advancements in sciences and innovation, Albania finds itself trailing behind its regional counterparts in scientific research.

A comprehensive study conducted by the esteemed Science journal scrutinized articles published across all European countries, spanning disciplines such as physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, biotechnology, engineering, and earth and space sciences.

Albania’s standing in Europe, as measured by the number of published scientific articles – a pivotal metric for gauging scientific research – places the country at the bottom of the list.

With only six published articles per 100,000 individuals, Albania records the lowest level of scientific output across the entire continent.

From a regional perspective, Serbia emerges as the leader with an impressive 69 articles per 100,000 individuals, followed by Montenegro with 50, North Macedonia with 21, and Kosovo with 15.

The root of Albania’s low standing in scientific research is attributed to a conspicuous lack of investment in research and development compared to its regional counterparts. This has led to a substantial deficit in the nation’s scientific and innovative capabilities.

At a time when science and technology play pivotal roles in economic and social development, the absence of concerted efforts to fortify this sector presents a formidable impediment for Albania. Meanwhile, other nations in the region are capitalizing on their investments in research and development to cultivate more innovative and sustainable economies.

Experts in the field identify one of the primary issues as the constrained scope of scientific education and the absence of specialized programs at higher education levels.

Albanian students frequently find themselves compelled to seek educational and training opportunities abroad to access the latest knowledge and techniques in various scientific domains.

A further challenge impacting Albania’s low rank in scientific research is the deficiency in international collaboration and advantageous affiliations with other scientific institutions and organizations. This has hindered active participation by Albanian scientists and students in international projects and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
