The Italian government gave the green light to the agreement between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Albanian counterpart Edi Rama for the transfer of migrants to Shengjin, signed in Rome on November 6, 2023.

The news was announced by foreign media, according to which the “OK” came this afternoon from the Council of Ministers. The pact was signed exactly one month ago at Palazzo Chigi by Giorgia Meloni and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.

After this “success”, as Antonio Tajani recalled, it will now be Parliament’s turn, which will decide whether the agreement will be approved or not.

The protocol presented by the two heads of government, Giorgia Meloni and Edi Rama, provides for the creation of structures in Albania to welcome migrants who have landed on Italian shores. The draft law defines the financial coverage and the first rules of implementation of the plan.

The areas given by Tirana for Rome will be subject exclusively to Italian jurisdiction. This means Italy will bear the burden 100%, which will have to create a guarantee fund and as an advance reimbursement for the first year, within three months from the entry into force of the agreement, will have to pay 16.5 million euros into the special account of the state treasury opened by Albania.
