Without the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, the two states cannot be integrated into the EU. Miroslav Lajčák, the EU envoy for dialogue, says that the two countries should speed up the negotiations because of the elections that are in the EU and the USA next year.

The EU’s special envoy for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajčák, said on Thursday in Brussels that there is progress in the implementation of some agreements reached in the dialogue between the two sides. He said that the future of the Western Balkan region cannot be imagined without the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

“The normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia is a matter of strategic importance. Without this normalization we cannot even dream of the European future. We have recently made progress in this direction. We will soon close the energy file, there is progress in the issue of license plates, in the issue of missing persons, in the issue of local elections in the north and in the implementation of the agreement on the road to the normalization of relations”, said Miroslav Lajčák, the envoy of especially the EU.

Lajčák said that next year are the elections in the EU and the USA and all parties should not lose time to reach an agreement and for the integration of countries in the EU.

“Geopolitics has opened the door for integration into the European Union, but it will not be automatic because the conditions must be met for such a thing. For the first time I see the European Union is more ready for the Balkans than the Balkans for the European Union”, said Miroslav Lajčák, the EU’s special envoy.

Lajčák ‘s statements were made at the “Friends of Europe” meeting, where diplomats from the EU and the USA and the countries of the Western Balkans participate.
