A former diplomat and member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences has made provocative statements in Belgrade media regarding Albanians, Kosovo and the creation of the Albanian state.

Theses against Albanians are not only part of the rhetoric of Serbian nationalists, but also find a place in the Academy of Sciences of Serbia by its most famous members.

Slavenko Terzic, a historian and former diplomat of Serbia in Russia, in a television interview stated that Albania, Kosovo and the Albanian nation are a fabricated idea.

“Kosovo is a territory that currently belongs to the Republic of Serbia. The issue of Albania came up at the Congress of Berlin (1878) during the war between Serbia, Montenegro, Russia and Turkey. Bismarku said himself that there is no Albanian nation, they had no idea of a nation. Even between ‘Geg’ and ‘Tosk’ they don’t understand each other. They did not have the awareness of a nation”, said Terzic.

The historian who has been praised by the Russian academy for his studies during the 1800s and is often invited in the media of Serbia as the best connoisseur of the Balkans goes even further in his provocation regarding Kosovo.

“In these 30 years, the West has not solved anything in the Balkans. No issue has been finally resolved from Croatia to Bulgaria. We in Serbia hesitate to present some facts about Kosovo. Researchers’ archives say that in the 1800s, Gjakova, Peja and Prizren had populations where the majority were Orthodox Serbs and Muslim Serbs,” said Terzic.

In addition to unrealistic historical theses, Terzic is also known as a pro-Russian intellectual in Belgrade. He was among the first to call not to impose sanctions on Moscow and not to make any concessions to Kosovo.
