Decorating the surroundings for the Christmas and New Year holidays using crafts is this year’s trend in Gjirokastra.

The characteristic works of local artisans are sought after not only by tourists but also by locals. Works such as needlework, traditional embroidery, even these types of works are exchanged as gifts for the end of the year.

“We try to make new products for Christmas to decorate the New Year tree, for different gifts, that’s why we started after the September-October tourist season, we started to produce for the New Year, we also make price reductions so that all people can buy them at more economical prices for gifts and to decorate homes for the holidays,” said Vjollca Mezini, master embroiderer.

In addition to souvenirs for gifts, handicraft products to decorate family environments or holiday tables are also preferred.

“There are also many products that they get for parties, to arrange their homes, new curtains, new covers to spread for parties, to make a change again for parties in their homes, then there are decorations” – added Mezini.

The return of tradition has been another factor that has helped to give even more attention to these works.

“Many people go to visit children abroad, to visit, to see family members, to celebrate the holidays, and for this reason they also come and get different gifts in the store,” she added.

On the eve of Christmas and New Year, the city of Gjirokastra has taken on a special appearance, while in this winter period it is preferred to be visited by tourists.
