The Specialist Chambers in The Hague modified the sentence of the former deputy chairman of the Organization of Veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army (OVL-UÇK), Nasim Haradinaj, on December 14, allowing him to be released from prison under certain conditions.
In May 2022, Haradinaj, along with the former chairman of the OVL-UÇK, Hysni Gucati, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison on charges of obstructing justice.
Later, the Appeals Chamber reduced their sentences by three months.
Gucati had his sentence modified on October 17, enabling his release from prison with conditions.
Haradinaj and Gucati were arrested on September 5, 2020, to be sent to The Hague.
According to the announcement, the President of the Specialist Chambers, Ekaterina Trendafilova, noted that “Haradinaj had the opportunity to reflect on his actions during his time in pre-trial detention”.
“Based on the report, he had respected the rules of the pre-trial detention facility in recent months,” the announcement states.
Trendafilova also “took into account Mr. Haradinaj’s remorse and his pledge not to engage in any other acts that could be characterized as criminal acts against the administration of justice and that he would fulfill all the conditions set for his release,” the announcement continues.
If “Haradinaj fails to meet any of the conditions specified in the decision, then the decision will be revoked”, the announcement emphasizes.
