Several thousand protesters took to the center of the Serbian capital, Belgrade, again on Saturday to demand the annulment of the December 17 elections.
The protest was called by the informal civil initiative ProGlas, initiated by well-known public figures.
Organizers stated that ProGlas’ demand is to hold parliamentary and local elections in Serbia within six months, “after a fundamental change in electoral conditions”.
They claim that the electoral will of the citizens has been “betrayed”.
A series of protests have been held in Serbia since the December 17 elections, fueled by accusations of electoral theft by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which declared victory at all levels.
The largest opposition coalition “Serbia against Violence” accused the SNS of electoral theft and called for the repetition of the elections.
Authorities have denied the allegations.
One day before the protest, on December 29, the Republic Election Commission of Serbia rejected the request of the “Serbia against Violence” coalition to annul the elections.
Concerns about irregularities in the elections were also expressed by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), which on December 18 announced that the elections were marked by significant irregularities, misuse of public funds, media dominance by President Aleksandar Vučić, negative campaigning, and the spread of fear.
Furthermore, some Members of the European Parliament called for an independent investigation into all reported irregularities during the elections held in Serbia on December 17.
The United States urged authorities in Serbia to investigate the claims of international observers regarding electoral irregularities.
