Catalonia in Spain seems to be enjoying the decision of the government of Pedro Sanches to recognize the passports of Kosovo, although Spain officially does not recognize it as an independent state.
An official of the United for Catalonia party has said that they are happy for Kosovars and happy that they will no longer have to lobby the Spanish Parliament on the issue of Kosovo passports.
Catalonia and the Basque region have been demanding autonomy and separation from Spain for years, a request that has been repeatedly rejected. This was also one of the reasons why Spain did not recognize Kosovo as a state, as it would pave the way for the same scenario with Catalonia.
While the regional government of Catalonia, led by the republican left, has declared that they stand in the same line with the European institutions, but it is official Spain that has an opposing position.
This decision has also been opposed by the Spanish opposition and has produced strong debates in the media and public opinion.
According to the Popular Party in Spain, this government decision to recognize the Kosovo passport paves the way for a similar scenario for the independence of the Catalonia region and their passports.
But the government has reacted by saying that the recent move to recognize the passport is not about a softening of Kalalonja’s demands and attitudes.
