The report of the European Union Statistics Office (Eurostat) ranks Albania third, after Sweden and Finland, in the consumption of energy derived from renewable sources, surpassing all other EU countries.
The report highlights that the gross consumption of energy generated from renewable sources in Albania for the year 2022 resulted in 44%.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, described this as an excellent indicator for the strategy followed so far and a clear guide for the path ahead.
“Albania on the podium in Europe for renewable energy. We have exceeded European objectives, thus ranking among the first countries. An excellent indicator for the strategy followed so far and a clear guide for the road ahead,” she declared in a post on social networks.
The indicator refers to the report on the consumption of energy derived from renewable sources, in contrast to the total energy consumption (electricity, fuel, etc.).
The use of renewable energy has many benefits, including a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, diversification of energy supplies, and a reduction in dependence on fossil fuel markets (oil and gas).
The growth of renewable energy sources can also stimulate employment in the EU by creating jobs in new “green” technologies.
Renewable energy sources include wind energy, solar energy (thermal, photovoltaic, and concentrated), hydropower, tidal energy, geothermal energy, ambient heat captured by heat pumps, biofuels, and the renewable portion of waste.
